Dr. Echegoyen earned his B.S. at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, and was graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1971. He received his PhD. there in 1974, having worked under the supervision of Prof. G. R. Stevenson. His thesis was titled: "Thermodynamic Parameters Controlling the Stability of Anion Radicals in Solution." Dr. Echegoyen did his postdoctoral work at the University of Wisconsion at Madison 1974-75, supervised by Prof. S.F. Nelsen.
Subsequent appointments have included Chemist I, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopist at Union Carbide Corporation, Bound Brook, New Jersey, (1975-1977); Assistant Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, (1977-1980); Associate Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, (1980-1983); Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, (1982-1983); Program Officer, Chemical Dynamics Program, National Science Foundation, Washington, D. C., (1982-1983); Associate Professor at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, (1983-1987); Member of the Chemistry Advisory Committee - NSF, (1986-1989); and Professor at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, (1987-2001).
Dr. Echegoyen served as Chair of the Department Chemistry at Clemson,( 2002-2006).
Research Interests
Dr. Echegoyen's research interests are in the areas of fullerene chemistry, electrochemistry and supramolecular chemistry. New fullerene derivatives are prepared via electrosynthetic routes developed in our laboratories, including a recently discovered reaction, the retro-Bingel reaction. Such reactions offer one of the most convenient preparative methods available to isolate derivatives of the higher fullerenes C76, C78 and C84, including their enantiomeric forms. Of particular interest are novel crown ether and porphyrin derivatives of fullerenes used in the formation of monolayers via self-assembly and molecular recognition. These compounds are also studied as solid-contact materials for the preparation of ion-selective electrodesensors. In addition to these supramolecular topics involving fullerenes and crown ethers, research in Dr. Echegoyen¹s laboratory involves preparing encapsulated fullerenes, or "trapped buckyballs," using electrosynthetic methods.
In another area of research, electrocrystallization techniques are used to prepare new conducting materials derived from transition metal complexes with bipyridine-like ligands. These materials are conceptually related to the electrides and constitute a new family of ³expanded-atom² structures. Other research involves the preparation of self-assembled, surface-confined, templated monolayer sensors. These are characterized using electro-chemical techniques, including impedance measurements.
