Research Interests | Publications

Dr. DesMarteau, Tobey-Beaudrot Professor of Chemistry, received his B.S. (1963) at Washington State University and Ph.D. (1966) at the University of Washington with Prof. George Cady. He taught at Northeastern University (1966-71) and Kansas State University (1971-82) before coming to Clemson as department head (1982-1989). He was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow (1975-77) and an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow (Heidelberg, 1979-80). He received the ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry, sponsored by PCR, Inc. (1983), the Clemson University Alumni Award for Outstanding Research (1985), Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science Research (1988), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Distinguished U.S. Scientist Award (1989), the ACS Charles H. Stone Award (1993),Washington State University Alumni Achievement Award (1995) and the College of Engineering and Science Award of Excellence for Faculty Achievement in the Sciences (1996). He serves on the Board of Editors of the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry.

Research Interests

Dr. DesMarteau's carDr. DesMarteau's research involves the study of fluorinated molecules and macromolecules. Projects include studying bioactive compounds throughselective fluorination and fluoroalkylation and new reagents for their syntheses and researching functionalized fluoropolymers for applications in fuel cells and secondary lithium batteries. Additional areas of research involve developing functionalized fluoropolymers for microlithography, photoacid generators for microlithography and novel small molecules as synthons for new types of monomers and materials.
